Tyler Whipple
Product leader building creative tools and AI products.
I've spent 14 years building software people use every day — creative tools, marketplaces, and machine-learning platforms. I trained as a mechanical engineer, started my career writing code, and moved into product because I kept caring more about what got built than how.
These days I lead product at Canva. Along the way, my work has taken me from Utah to Palo Alto to Paris and beyond — I'm a dual US–Australian citizen.
On AI
I've been building AI products since well before the current wave — shipping machine-learning recommendation systems at Dailymotion in 2015, running A/B tests and Mechanical Turk evaluations back when "AI product manager" wasn't a job title yet.
What excites me now is the same thing that did then: AI that quietly makes tools better, not AI as a party trick. The most interesting product problems today sit at the seam between generative models and the software people already rely on — making AI output genuinely editable, trustworthy, and fast enough to feel like part of the tool rather than bolted onto it.
There's a personal side too. I started out as an engineer, and after years of leading product rather than writing code, AI has made me a builder again — taking ideas from sketch to working software myself. It's a new space, and the most exciting one I've worked in.
Career
Product Lead, Editing Foundations
I lead product for the foundation of Canva's editor — the core framework, rendering, editing APIs, and performance that every design experience is built on. My focus is deep technical work that ships without disrupting the people relying on it, and shaping how the editor supports AI-powered design generation. Earlier roles here covered Presentations and data visualization.
Group Product Manager, Enterprise
Led product strategy for the enterprise business — a platform letting large organizations flexibly scale their workforce while meeting governance and compliance requirements. A client-facing role, partnering closely with sales and research collaborators to keep customer needs aligned with long-term product direction.
Product Manager, AI & Data
Owned recommendation and personalization systems in Palo Alto, then the broader AI and data product portfolio in Paris — search, content analysis, fraud and spam detection. Worked hands-on with data scientists and ML engineers, validating product hypotheses through experimentation.
Android Software Engineer → Product Manager, Mobile
Where it all started: writing Android software for connected fitness equipment — treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes — then moving into product to lead roadmaps for concurrent iOS and Android apps, coordinating engineering, design, and customer-facing teams.
